![]() Rolf Anderson first started taking nature photographs while growing up in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. His father, Leroy Anderson, loaned him his Leica M2 and said "practice framing your subject first and then when you think you're ready to take pictures, I'll buy you a roll of film." The waterfall in the evergreen forest across the road from his Woodbury home was Rolf's first subject. Working at the Mount Washington Weather Observatory gave him the chance to photograph mountains. At the Observatory he learned darkroom techniques while being trained as a weather observer. Living and working on a dairy farm in Belgium for a year followed by two years in one of Germany's largest national parks provided many opportunities for photographing the European countryside. Rolf skied and climbed in Switzerland and Austria during his years in Germany, taking his camera along. Back in the U.S. Rolf spent the next 15 years working as a ski instructor and mountain guide. He lead wilderness trips for Vermont Voyageur Expeditions in New Hampshire's White Mountains, New York's Adirondacks and Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park. Rolf co-founded the Hazen's Notch Association, an environmental education center and conservation land trust in his home town of Montgomery, Vermont. Over the next fifteen years he led the organization, teaching young people from northern Vermont and beyond to act as stewards of their natural resources. Contact

![]() As he shifted his focus from large wilderness areas across many states to a single watershed in one town, his home ground became the focus of Rolf's photographs. Now with meadow flowers, apple trees, small streams, beaver ponds and children as his subjects, Rolf sharpened his skills at composing photographs in more intimate settings that capture the simple beauty of the near-at-hand. The Hazen's Notch Association web site, newsletters, and calendars became the outlet for his photographs. You can see and purchase Rolf's work at the HNA Welcome Center on the Hazen's Notch Road in Montgomery and at Trout River Traders on Main Street in Montgomery Center. In addition to Photography, Rolf enjoys teaching French to children and adults in several northern Vermont communities. He has been an active volunteer for several non profit organizations in Vermont. Rolf was President of the Green Mountain Club [GMC] from 1997-2000. He founded the Northern Frontier chapter of the GMC in 2000. Rolf served on the Catamount Trail Association board of directors for over 10 years. He founded Montgomery Community Gardens in 2006. He has also served on the board of the Montgomery Historical Society. Rolf enjoys supporting organizations which promote the conservation of natural resources, historic preservation, children's literacy, music education in schools, fine arts and the performing arts, and sustainable living. Rolf is currently developing a cultural exchange program intended to create partnerships between music schools in Sweden and New England.
