Welcome. This page describes a trip to the USA by Patrik Dahlbom, music teacher of Musikskolan Kristianstad, Sweden and music director of the Christianstad Symfoniker Orkester. Patrik's trip to the USA was made possible by Kristianstad Lions Club in recognition of Patrik's great success as director of the Leroy Anderson Music Festival in Kristianstad on April 26, 2008.
20 March 2009 > Boston Patrik arrived in Boston on a flight from Copenhagen and was met by Jane Anderson Vercelli, a daughter of Leroy Anderson and Jane's son Anders Vercelli. By car they toured Beacon Hill, the Statehouse, the North End, the Back Bay, Faneuil Hall and Little Italy. They had dinner at the Chilton Club and stayed there for the night.
21 March 2009 > Boston + Thompson, Connecticut
Later this day the group traveled to the town of Thompson in the northeast corner of Connecticut, 1.5 hours by car southwest from Boston. Here at the home of the Vercelli family, Patrik enjoyed supper and an informal concert which featured Ukrainian virtuoso violinist Yaroslav Tereshchenko who performed the Chaconne from Partita for violin in D Minor by J.S. Bach, Violin Concerto No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev and Sonata No. 3 Ballada by Eugene Ysaye. Weather in Boston today: Low/High temp -1/+8; Sunny
22 March 2009 > Thompson, Connecticut Patrik woke in Thompson, Connecticut at the Vercelli House. Mid-day he traveled by car one hour north of Thompson through Massachusetts to New Hampshire. Here he was met by Rolf Anderson who took Patrik to Hanover, New Hampshire, home of Dartmouth College, one of the leading universities in the USA.

23 March 2009 > Burlington, Vermont Patrik spent a very comfortable night at the Lang House followed by a breakfast meeting with Alan Jordan, Executive Director, of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. Next Patrik and Rolf went to the Shelburne Community School and spent time with David Myers who taught a Wind Band class. Next Patrik and Rolf met with Burlington mayor Bob Kiss and Burlington City Arts director Doreen Kraft. They discussed potential cultural and civic exchanges between Burlington, Vermont and Kristianstad, Sweden. Next Patrik + Rolf visited the Lake Champlain Science Center and then met with Andrea Rogers of the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts.

24 March 2009 > Burlington, Vermont

Now it was time to leave the Lake Champlain Valley and drive the length of Vermont to Northampton, Massachusetts. Here Patrik + Rolf met David Kidwell at the Hotel Northampton. David Kidwell is a composer, choir director, and conductor of the Holyoke Community College Orchestra. They discussed possible collaborations between the two orchestras. Weather in Burlington today: Low/High temp -6/+4; Sunny but very windy; Cold.

25 March 2009 > Woodbury, Connecticut After a very good night at The Hotel Northampton in Northampton, Massachusetts, Patrik + Rolf traveled south to Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, and continued to Woodbury, the home of Leroy Anderson. They arrived at St. Paul's Espicopal Church where the Anderson family regularly attended church services.

Next Patrik + Rolf drove to the Leroy Anderson Home on Grassy Hill Road and met Eleanor Anderson who still lives in the house where Leroy wrote many of his best known compositions. Patrik presented Eleanor with a present from Kristianstad. He saw Leroys workroom, library and the living room with his piano. The piano technician was busy tuning the piano for the concert that evening. Patrik admired the beautiful landscape around the 12-hectare property and the view of Woodbury from the Leroy Anderson Home on Grassy Hill. Patrik, Eleanor + Rolf traveled to the Good News Café in Woodbury where they enjoyed a delicious lunch with Jane Anderson Vercelli, husband Peter Vercelli, sons Lars Vercelli + Anders Vercelli and his friend Blake Marquez. Next Patrik took a tour of Woodbury visiting places in Woodbury where Leroy lived and where he wrote much of his music. Of special interest was the house on Painter Hill Road where Leroy first had the idea for his best known composition Sleigh Ride.

Alyce Bertz, violinist + Concertmaster of the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, and Susan , pianist performed numerous Anderson compositions including Belle of the Ball, Jazz Pizzicato, Forgotten Dreams, Blue Tango, The Typewriter and Plink, Plank, Plunk!. Next Leroy Andersons grandsons Anders Vercelli, pianist, + Lars Vercelli, singer, performed other selections from Leroys works. These included Save a Kiss, The Syncopated Clock, Serenata, Hello, This Lovely World, and The Music in My Heart. The guests enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner. Patrik Dahlbom and Woodbury Lions Club officer Don Heavens exchanged banners from the Kristianstad Lions Club and the Woodbury Lions Club in mutual respect and appreciation for their contribution to the celebration of Leroy Andersons centennary.
26 March 2009 > Woodbury, CT + New York, NY After a good night's sleep and breakfast at Grassy Hill, Patrik said 'goodbye' to Eleanor Anderson, Rolf Anderson and Peter Vercelli. Patrik, Jane Vercelli and sons Anders + Lars traveled by car from Woodbury to New York City. After finding their rooms at the Yale Club, they ate dinner at the classic Grand Central Oyster Bar. Next they went to a performance of the Yale Whiffenpoofs at the Yale Club.
27 March 2009 > New York City, NY Saturday began with a visit to St. Patrick's Cathedral, followed by the view from the observation deck at Top of the Rock high above Rockefeller Center. Next they bought lunch at Citarella's the “Ultimate Gourmet Market” which they took to Central Park for a picnic. They visited Roosevelt Island and had dinner at the Yale Club. After dinner they enjoyed seeing the musical South Pacific and went to Times Square afterwards.
28 March 2009 > New York City, NY They visited St. Paul's Chapel at the Ground Zero Memorial in Lower Manhattan.
Patrik Dahlbom at 'Ground Zero' Memorial in New York City Patrik, Jane, Anders + Lars revisted Rockefeller Center and then went to the percussive show STOMP!. They had true Italian style pizza at Serefina and then went to see the musical The Lion King.

Jane, Anders, Patrik + Lars After another good night's sleep and breakfast at the Yale Club, Jane, Anders + Lars traveled by car to the Newark, NJ airport and said “goodbye” to Patrik who then flew to Atlanta to meet his wife Eva and children Joanne and Nina to continue to Orlando, Florida for some warmer weather and relaxation. |
